SOUTH ANDAMAN:
PORT BLAIR AND AROUND
South Andaman is
today the most heavily populated of the Andaman Islands, particularly around the
capital, Port Blair. Foreign tourists can only visit its southern reaches
western shores at Wandoor, 35-km southwest of Port Blair.

Parks
Mahatma Gandhi Marine
National Park, Wandoor

Kms. from Port Blair. It is an abode of dense mangrove forest, tropical forests,
magnificant coral reefs, colourful under water marine life.Spread over an area
of 281.5 sq.km., it covers open sea, creeks and
15 small and large islands.
Children's
Traffic Park
Set up by the Traffic Police to create awareness about traffic rules among young
children. The joy ride on a toy train makes the trip here even more enjoyable.
Gandhi Park
Dilthaman Tank, the only source of drinking water in Port Blair, was developed
into Gandhi Park within just 13 days. Facilities include Children's Park, Deer &
Bird Park, Water Sports, Japanese Temple, Bunker, Restaurant and a take.
Beaches
Corbyn's Cove
Tourism Complex
Just 7 kms. away from the town. Corbyn Cove is the beach for those who love
swimming, surfing and sun basking.
Chatham Saw
Mill
One of the oldest & largest saw mills in Asia - the Chatham Saw Mill is built on
a small island. A bridge connects it to Port Blair. It is a shortage house of
countless varieties of timber like Satinwood, Padauk, Marble and Gurjan.
Mini zoo
Situated in Haddo,
Port Blair, it houses some of the rare species of endemic birds and animals
found in these islands.
Islands
Ross Island
The Ross Island was once a small, sleepy island with dense jungles, intertwining
creepers, thick foliage and grandfather trees. Almost overnight, the island was
transformed into a thriving imperial settlement with mansions, churches and
recreational areas. .
Viper Island
Close to Port Blair, it was the Jail where the Britishers kept the under trails.
When the Cellular Jail was built in 1906 this was abandoned.
Water Sports
Complex
A sport complex with a difference which has facilities for adventure filled
water sports like Kayaks, Aqua Glide, Bumper boats, Rowing boats, Aqua Cycle and
a saline water swimming Pool. Enjoy nature walks, food plazas, changing room.
Cinque Islands
Cinque actually comprises two islets, joined by a spectacular sand isthmus, with
shall low water either side that covers it completely at high tide. The main
incentive to come here is the superlative Diving and Snorkelling around the
reefs.
Cities
Chidiya Tapu
For more isolation, rent a moped or take a taxi 30-km south to Chirya Tapu or
"Bird Island", at the tip of South Andaman. Lush green mangroves and the beaches
add to its beauty.
Madhuban
Madhuban is the trekking area for nature lovers situated 75 kilometers form Port
Blair in the north-east of the South Andaman Island. Flora and fauna, endemic
birds, animals and butterflies make the trek most interesting.
Mount
Harriet
Mount Harriet, a picnic spot par excellence offers a breathtaking view of
Port Blair. The highest peak in the south Andaman towering at 365 meters above
sea level, Mt. Harriet was the summer headquarters of the Chief commissioner
during the colonial rule.
Sippighat
Farm
Sprawling over an area of 80 acres is a Government farm. Research & Development
programmes for cultivation of spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, coconut and
pepper are conducted here.
