ABOUT
HYDERABAD
HYDERABAD is the capital of Andhra
Pradesh. With a population of over 4 million, Hyderabad is bursting at the
seams. Elevated to the status of the fifth big city, the state capital is no
longer the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It is now a tri-city, with
the addition of Cyberabad. Founded by Quli Qutub Shah on the banks of the Musi,
the city has a Hindu-Muslim ethos that began with the Sultan’s romance with the
beautiful Bhagmati.

PLACES TO SEE
Birla Temple &
Planetarium
The Lord Venkateshwara temple or the Birla temple is built in white Rajasthani
marble and graces one of the twin rocky hills overlooking the south end of
Hussain Sagar lake. It’s open to Hindus and non-Hindus alike and gives an
excellent view of the city, especially at sunset. On the adjacent hill is the
planetarium and science museum. This museum has regular presentation on various
subjects related to astronomy and space. Presentations in English at 11 am, 4
p.m. and 6 p.m. daily. It’s closed on the last Thursday of every month
Charminar

A proud sentinel in the heart of the Old City, this magnificent monument built
by Quli Qutub Shah, is the unique symbol of Hyderabad. It was built in 1591 by
Quli Qutb Shah. to commemorate the end of the plague that had ravaged Hyderabad,
The four graceful minarets from which 'Charminar' derives its name, literally
meaning 'Four Minars' soar to a height of 48.7 Mts. each, above the ground.
Golconda Fort
Golconda is one of the historic fortresses of hyderabad spread over a radius of
3 KM . The fort which is a massive structure with a walled enclosure, with eight
gates was built on a hill which was once the territory of the Kakatiya Kings of
Waranagal
Hussain Sagar Lake
The dam which is a link between the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad is
one and half mile long named after Hussain Shah Wali and covers area of about
8sq.miles.
The major attraction of this lake is the 18 metre high, 350 tone monolithic
staue o lord buddha on the rock of Gibraltar. The bund is lined with 33 statues
of famous personalities of the state. Boating and Water Sports are a regular
feature at Hussain sagar
Mecca Masjid
Mecca Masjid which lies 100 yards south-west of Charminar is the biggest mosque
in city.The name is derived from the grand mosque at mecca on which it is
patterned The hall is 67m by 54m and 23m high.The roof is supported by 15
arches, 5 on each of the three sides.The western side is blocked by a high wall
to provide the Mehrib. This mosque is one of the largest mosque in India and can
accomodate ten thousand people at a time
Salarjung Museum
The name of Salar Jung immediately conjures up visions of priceless antiques
that constitute one of the largest private collections in the world. Though
credit for amassing the collections goes to Salar Jung III, the beginners were
made by his grandfather and father
The Museum attracts nearly ten lakh visitors annually. The Salar Jung Museum was
declared as an "institution of national importance" by an act of parliament in
1961
EXCURSIONS
Shilparamam : Craft village set up at Madhapur beyond Jubilee hills of
Hyderabad.
Yadagirigutta: Situated on the hillock near Hyderabad in Nagalconda
district, three forms of Lord Narasimha are manifested here as Gandhabherunda,
Yogananda and Jwala. The reigning deity Laxmi Narayanaswamy is enshrined at
height of 178 m. The majestic five storey gopuram and the Vaikunta Dwaram are
impressive.
Nacharam: Close to Hyderabad in Medak District, it has an ancient Laxmi
Narasimha swamy temple. The Andhra Pardesh Tourism Department runs a tourist
complex here.
Deccan Pre-Historic Rocks : Geologist date the grey granite rocks here at
approximately 2500 million years- the only one in Asia.
Medack Church: Built on an immense scale in solid white granite, the
Gothic structure is one of the best and largest in the country. It can
accommodate as many as 5000 people.
Shamirpet: An Andhra Pardesh tourist complex is located in the vicinity
of the man-made Jawahar lake.
Osmansagar Lake: It was built by constructing a dam on the river Musi in
1920 by Mir Osman Khan and planned by Mokshagundam Visweswarayya for water
supply. The place offers excellent picnic spot with well laid gardens.
Kolanupak:It was the second capital town of Kalyani Chalukyas during 11th
century and as a religious center of Janis. Several historic monument, temples
and sculptures from 10th and 11th century exist here.
Kondapur : It is known as the ' Taxaxila of the south' and is referred to
as the 'Town of Mounds". Remains of the vast Buddhist complex, buildings, coins
of gold silver, copper and lead have been excavated here over the years

Air:Hyderabad is connected by air with Ahemdabad, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkotta,
Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam.
Rail :Hyderabad / Secunderabad are connected by rail with major cities.
Road: Hyderabad is also well-connected by National Highways. It is
connected by road to Banglore(590 km), Visakhapatnam(667 km), Chennai(671 km),
Goa (698) km, Mumbai (713 km).
SHOPPING
Hyderabad is synonymous with pearls. Cultured pearls studded in gold and
silver jewellery of exquisite design are specialty. Pearls and diamonds are what
the nobles in the mediaeval times sought here. Hyderabad is also famous for
Bidriware, derives its beauty from the contrast created by the inlaid
metal-gold silver or brass against the black background. Originating from Bidar,
this art achieved perfection in Hyderabad. For women, Hyderabad holds yet
another shopping opportunity—those irresistible late saris in striking
colors. The patterning is done by resist-dyeing or tie-dyeing the yarn before it
is put on the loom for weaving

Main Shopping areas : Abids Basheerbagh, Nampally and Sultan Bazar in
Hyderabad; MG Road and Rashtrpati Road in Secunderabad. The markets around
Charminar are favoured for bangles and pearls. Pochampali sarees and fabrics,
hand woven in silks and cottons are some of the other handicrafts and perfumes
that have made Hyderabad a shopper's delight. The best place to buy arts &
crafts from all over India is Kalanjali on Nampally high Rd.
