ABOUT IDUKKI
A landlocked district, Idukki is one
of the most nature rich areas of Kerala. High ranges and wooded valleys are
girded by three main rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar - and their
tributaries. The river Pamba also has its origin here. As a tourist destination,
Idukki offers diverse attractions like wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations,
spice plantation tours, mountain treks, elephant rides etc.

PLACES TO SEE
Thekkady Altitude: 900-1800 m above sea level ,Rainfall: 2500 mm
The very sound of the word Thekkady conjures up images of elephants, unending
chains of hills and spice scented plantations. In the Periyar forest of Thekkady
is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India, and spread across the entire
district are picturesque plantations and hill towns that hold great
opportunities for treks and mountain walks.
Cheeyappara The Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls are located between
Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Kochi - Madurai highway. The Cheeyappara
Waterfalls cascade down in seven steps. It is a real feast for the eyes. This is
also a great place for trekking.
Munnar Munnar, one of the most popular hill stations in India is situated
at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and
Kundala. Located at 1600 m above sea level, this was once the summer resort of
the erstwhile British Government in South India. Sprawling tea plantations,
picture book towns, winding lanes, trekking and holiday facilities make Munnar a
unique experience
Idukki Arch Dam This is the world's second and Asia's first arch dam,
constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills. 550 ft. high and 650 ft. wide,
the dam lies close to the Cheruthoni barrage. To its west is the Kulamavu Dam.
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located closeby.
Pothamedu (6 km from Munnar): Pothamedu offers an excellent view of the
tea, coffee and cardamom plantations in Munnar. The rolling hills, the lush
mountain and the breathtaking scenery here is ideal for trekking and long
mountain walks.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary Proximity to Eravikulam National Park and
Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu makes Chinnar rich in wildlife. This
sanctuary is easily accessible from Udumalpet in Tamil Nadu and Munnar in Kerala.
Maryur : Famous for sandwood forests. Marayur jaggery is well-known.
Sericulture and silk sari weaving are other attractions.

Air : The nearest airport Cochin, 132 km away.
Rail : No rail line in the district. Nearest Railway station at Kottayam,
133 km away.
Road : Thodupuzha, the major town in the district, is well connected with
other parts of the district and the state. KSRTC operates bus services from
Thodupuzha station to several cities including district headquarters. Bus
services on high range roads are scant
