ABOUT
PALAKKAD
The district of Palakkad known as
the granary of Kerala, is a land of valleys, hillocks, rivers, forests, mountain
streams, dams and irrigation projects. Situated at the foot of the Western Ghats,
this is the gateway to Kerala from the north. Palakkad derives its name from the
Malayalam words Pala ( Alsteria scholaris) and Kadu (forest) which goes to prove
that this place was once a beautiful stretch of forests covered with the sweet
scented flowers of the Pala tree.

PLACES TO SEE
The Tippu Fort: The Tipu's Fort, also known as Palakkad Fort, stands in
the heart of Palakkad town. Palakkad is a small town on the lower edges of the
Sahyadri ranges of the Western Ghats, with patches of dense forests and
crisscrossed with rivers.
One of the well preserved forts in south India, Tipu's Fort was constructed in
1766 AD and is today a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of
India. The sober majesty of the laterite walls of the fort reminds one of the
old tales of valour and courage.
Malampuzha : Dam and garden, children's park, aquarium, ropeway and
fantasy park (10 km from Palakkad)This famous picnic spot which comprises a dam
and beautifully landscaped gardens, is situated on the lower hills of the
Western Ghats.
Silent
Valley : The Silent Valley contains India’s last substantial stretch of
tropical evergreen rain forests and it is perhaps the only vestige of a near
virgin forest in the whole of the Western Ghats. Elephants, tigers, wild dog,
flying squirrel and lion-tailed macaque are found here.
Nelliyampathy
:A forest range 75 kms. (travel time: 2 ½ hours) from Palghat, the Nelliyampathy
hills comprise a chain of ridges cut off from one another by valleys of dense
evergreen forests and orange plantations The height of the hills range from 467
meters to the tallest peak Padagiri looming at 1572 meters.
Parambikkulam
:Parambikulam is endowed with luxuriant vegetation. It has one of the largest
population of gaur (bison). Sambar, spotted deer, jungle cat, lion-tailed
macaque, common otter, sloth bear etc. are also seen. There are also a few
tigers and leopards.
Thenari It is believed that the waters of this natural spring, located in
front of the old Sree Rama Temple here, is as sacred as the waters of the
Ganges.
Siruvani: (46 km north of Mannarkad and 48 km from Palakkad)The reservoir
at Siruvani was built for Tamil Nadu by the Kerala Government to meet the
drinking water requirements of Coimbatore. The gateways on either side of the
road across the dam are typical of the Kerala and Tamil architectural styles.
Siruvani is also home to certain tribals like the Mudugars and Irulars.

Air : The nearest airport Coimbatore, 55kms. away. Cochin Airport,
16Okms. away. Calicut airport 180 km away.
Rail : Bus service to all parts of Kerala and major cities in Tamilnadu,
more so Coimbathore.
Road : Palakkad and Shornoore are major railway stations. Services to
Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore sectors.
