French dreams of an Indian Empire
began and ended in Pondicherry. But in the scattered territories of
the Union Territory of Pondicherry there remains what little there is left of
the French influence in India and that makes the territory, especially its
headquarters, Pondicherry, unique, something quite different from the rest of
India.
The Union Territory of Pondicherry comprises of 4 coastal regions viz- Pondicherry,
Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam . Pondicherry and Karaikal are situated on the East
Coasts in Tamil Nadu, Yanam in Andra Pradesh and Mahe on the West Coast in
Kerala.
Pondicherry is a union teritory
which lies within the state of Tamil Nadu. The inherent ambience of Pondicherry
becomes most evident in the oldest part of the town which flanks the seashore
boulevard.
Pondicherry is the Capital of this Union Territory. It is on
the east coast about 162 kms south of Chennai ( Madras ) located on the
Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal.
Pondicherry is situated in four coastal enclaves in South India. The mother
territory Pondicherry is in the basin of Ginjeeriver, Karaikal situated some
160 kms south is kissed by the canals of Cauvery; Yanam is a pocket 900 kms
away north in the lap of Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh washed by
Godavari river; and tucked away on the other side of the Peninsula of the
mouth of river Mahe is the small enclave of Mahe in Kerala. All put together
give Pondicherry the character of a "mini South India".
