Pondicherry is a good place for shopping. It has
lots to offer. It is nearly the best shopping destination of the southern
metropolitan cities. Shopping at Pondicherry is very cheap with low taxes or
non-existent. It is known for its traditional doll-making and textiles and
silks.
It is also the birthplace of several world class brands in leather, pottery,
aromatics, fashion and handmade paper.
There are
various shopping centres in Pondicherry. Handicrafts, textile, leather goods,
antiques, jewelery, silvercrafts etc..., are available here. Dolls made out of
terracotta, papier mache and plaster are a pride to handicrafts industries.

quality leather products can be found in numerous shops. Products range from
leather clothing to belts and bags to footwear. Many shops also undertake orders
of one's own choice of design and leather. Leather goods can be found in the

pottery
Excellent ceramic artists
and artisans work in Pondicherry and Auroville. They keep a keen eye out for the
right kind of clay and glazes and make the kilns appropriate to the local
environment. Lending their signature an elegant simplicity and a unique
decorative flourish.
furniture
Pondicherry is also
well-known for antiques, curios and refinished colonial and traditional
furniture. In addition one can find wooden carvings, reproduction furniture,
glass paintings and old prints. The wide selection does not end here amongst
other things one can aslo find Tanjore paintings, paintings on glass and
religious lithographs.
TEXTILES
Pondicherry has long been a centre for the production of household linen and
garment textiles in satin, twill, corduroy, poplin, chambray, oxford and
cambric. Khadi (a home-spun fabric) comes through as nice, easy-to-care-for
clothing. Crisp, printed cotton fabrics, smelling of fresh dye roll out at great
pace from the Anglo-French textile mill in Pondicherry. With a work force of
5,000, fabric from this 100-year-old company are sold throughout Europe, the US,
Australia and the Middle East
Chains, neckless, earrings, nose ear, bangles,
anklets, waistbands, broaches rings for toes, finger made from gold and silver
enhances the talents available with the goldsmiths. Wood carving craftsmen make
decorated products from wood and showed their skill in their field. The
furnitures, chairs, almirahs, sofas, carved in wood are admired by the French
and these craftsmen where given opportunity and their work is displayed in the
