ABOUT
RAMESWARAM
Rameswaram known as the Varanasi of
the south, Rameswaram is a major pilgrimage centre for both Shaivites and
Vaishnavaites as it was here that Rama ( an incarnation of Vishnu in the Indian
epic the Ramayana ) offered thanks to Siva. At the town's core is the
Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the most important temples in southern India.
Rameswaram is on an island in the Gulf of Mannar, connected to the mainland at
Mandapam by rail and by one of India's engineering wonders, the Indira Gandhi
Bridge. The bridge took 14 years to build and was opened by Rajiv Gandhi late in
1988.

PLACES TO SEE
Ramanathaswamy Temple
It is situated near to the sea on the eastern side of the island is renowned for
its magnificient corridors with massive sculptured pollars lining it . The
corridor is the longest in the world. It is 197 metres long ( East – West ) and
133 metres wide( South-North ). The temple has storey tower ( Gopuram ), 38.4
high. The temple as it stands today was built by different rulers at different
periods from the 12th century AD .
Adam's Bridge
Adam's Bridge is the name given to the chain of reefs, sandbanks and islets that
almost connects Sri Lanka with India. According to legend, this is the series of
stepping stones used by Hanuman to follow Ravana, in his bid to rescue Sita.
Agni
Theertham
Sri Ramanathaswamy temple faces east. The seashore, about 100 metres from
the main entrance of the temple, is very calm and therfore ideal for bathing.The
water at this place is considered sacred and known as ‘Agni Theertham’.
Pillgrims perform poojas for their ancestors at this seashore .
Gandhamadana Parvatam
The stepped mandapam or hall, about a mile and a half west of the Ramanathaswamy
Temple offers an excellent view of the countryside. There is a footprint here
believed to be of Lord Rama.
Five faced Hanuman Temple:
Situated 2 kms from the main temple, the deity of Hanuman brought with sendooram.
Idols of Ram, Sita and Hanuman brought form Dhanushkodi during 1964 cyclone was
taken place here. Floating stone, used to built Sethu Bandanam ( Bridge between
India and Lanka ) in this temple was Worth seeing.
Jadayu Theertham:
It is in the south side of Rameswaram when Ravana Kidnapped Sita , Jadayu ( King
of Birds ) fought with Ravana to save Sita from him .But his wings cut off and
fell down in this place. There is a temple and a pond surrounded by seven sand
dunes at this place. The pond water is very tasty like a tender cocunut and it
is like a oasis in desert . Maamangam festival is being celebrated here, once in
12 years, at this theertham.
Nambu Nayagi Amman temple:
It is a temple of high regard for the people of Ramnad District , situated at 8
kms from Rameswaram main temple on the way to Dhanushkodi.
EXCURSION
Kurusadai
Island ( 23 kms ): This and a number of other islands are situated to the
west of the pamban bridges .It is a paradise for biologists .There are a number
of other islands in the area .Tourists have to get permission from Assistant
Director( Fisheries ), Mandapam to visit this island.
Mandapam ( 18 kms ): Connects Rameswaram with the mainland. A boat ride
to Kurusadai Island can be arranged from here.
Ramanathapuram ( 55 kms ): Apart from being the district headquarters,
this is an ancient town where the sethupathis ruled their territory . The
Ramalinga Vilasam palace with good paintings and the tomb of Thayumana swamigal,
a philosopher saint are worth visiting.

Air: Nearest Airport in Madurai - 174 kms. Indian Airlines connect’s
Madurai with Chennai, Trichy, Bangalore and Mumbai.
Rail : Connected with all major cities like Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore,
Trichy, Thanjavur and Palghat.
Road : Connected with all important towns of Tamilnadu, City Buses are
available including night services.
SHOPPING
Rameswaram is famous for variety of
handicrafts. Near the temples you can find lots of shops that have different
items made from palm leaf, beads and seashells. Khadicraft is the shop where
your search ends for handicraft items in the city. Rameswaram silk sarees are
very popular among the ladies.
